I know that I am a huge dork, but nothing makes me happier than a really good costume drama. Really, it’s like porn for dorks. In my not so humble opinion, no one does it better than the BBC! I’ve been meaning for some time now to put together a list of my favorite miniseries, but I haven’t done it, because procrastination is my middle name, which is also why I resolved to blog every day, or else I go 6 weeks between posts. I am also occasionally a fan of run-on sentences. So there’s that.
ANYWAY, back to the point at hand, I was feeling randomly grumpy and disgruntled today. Couldn’t tell you why– nothing has happened to irritate me, unlike yesterday, where it seemed like something irritating happened every 5 minutes (REALLY, Target? You can’t get ANYONE to supply you with celery in ANY FORM?). Then I discovered a brand-new miniseries, all shiny and unwatched, and after just 1 episode, I am all cheerful again!
It’s called Downton Abbey, and it’s written by Julian Fellowes, who also wrote Gosford Park and The Young Victoria, 2 excellent entries in the category of costume-drama porn. Also, he played Kilwillie in Monarch of the Glen, which while not period, is a really entertaining (and sadly defunct) BBC series set in the Scottish Highlands.
Downton Abbey is set in 1912 (late Edwardian period), and so far seems to be of the upstairs/downstairs variety. I really like that, because since I am a dork, I really enjoy seeing how these huge houses functioned in every day life. Yes, the BBC/PBS series Manor House is one of my favorite things on the planet. How did you know?
Anyway, I just wanted to share my excitement about discovering this great series. My first instinct is to watch the whole thing at once, but surely it would be more sensible to just watch 1 episode a day, thus sustaining the pleasure… hmmm… We shall see!
